Beach Volleyball - Getting Started

If your looking to start playing Beach Volleyball. There's a few things you can do.

The Inexpensive way: Find a few friends that want to play Beach Volleyball. find a sand court. Several parks in South Florida have sand courts and certain parts of the beaches also have sand courts. The south beach area in Miami is full of courts as is next to the Yankee Clipper in Ft. Lauderdale. Drive around and your sure to find them. At first you can start playing 4 on 4's or 3 on 3's so that you get used to playing in the sand. Make your 2 person team and play against your friends and other walk up teams that challenge you. After a month try out your skills at a local beach tournament. They go on til mid September, so you have time to go back to playing with friends and improving your game.

Keep in mind that when your playing beach volleyball you need to make clean and low passes to one another so that the wind does not push the ball to far. Communication is key and shadowing one-another will help you do well on the beach. As in the indoor game, a strong serve is your friend.

The Best Way to learn the game is to go to the Dig Website (see the link on the side-bar) and find the group nearest you. They have a program that includes practice and top instructions by top beach players. They will get you ready to be very competitive. To take part in the Dig you need to have your USAV membership.

In Miami there is a Volleyball Academy that offers lessons for Beach Volleyball in Tamiami park for a very fair fee. Their link can be found on the side bar under WAVA.

For those of you that are not USAV members but want to get involved in Beach Volleyball you can either become USAV members or play in the FVBT (see the link on the side-bar). USAV members can also participate in these tournaments.

I promise you that if you play beach volleyball for the summer - you will become a faster, more aggressive and complete player when you step on the court again.
